Kaimana Chee
Kaimana Chee was born and raised on the north shore of the
island of O'ahu in Hawai'i. He started dancing hula at the age of nine and began
teaching while in high school. Collectively, Kaimana has
over 20 years of dancing and teaching experience. In 1994, Kaimana participated
in
the prestigious Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, an annual
competitive event recognized as the mainstay of the Hula and Hawaiian Culture.
While attending college, he established the Hui-O-Aloha
Dancers at Boise State University, a Polynesian performing group. In 2000,
Kaimana
relocated to Okinawa, Japan where he performed nightly as
a musician, singer and dancer at the Okinawa Renaissance Resort. Upon returning
to
Hawai'i, Kaimana choreographed and produced several shows
for a series of daytime and dinner cruises. Along with former student, Marsha
Grey,
Kaimana established Hulabootie, an ongoing Hula school and
performing group based in Tokyo, Japan. Currently, Kaimana resides in Columbia,
MD. and is the new managing director of Hoaloha, a
Maryland-based Polynesian ensemble dedicated to preserving and perpetuating
island
cultures through music and dance.
