Workshops and master classes by faculty and guest artists are offered to supplement the regular schedule of classes. They are in-depth studies of a particular dance style or concept. Workshop beginning and ending dates vary. Workshops help students improve specific skills and master classes give students a chance to study and learn with some of the industry’s leading talents. Please note that Spanish Dance and Middle Eastern Dance workshops are listed under World Dance on our scheduler.
Single Ladies Workshop with Quynn Johnson

Calling all Single Ladies! Have you ever wanted to learn choreography from the Single Ladies video by Beyonce? Well, now is your chance! This two-hour workshop teaches choreography inspired by the Single Ladies, Put a Ring on It video, taught by Quynn Johnson. Come out and have a great time learning new moves from one of the hottest dance videos. High Heels are welcomed, but not mandatory.
Intersecting Dance: Dance Diversity on the Silk Road with Laurel Victoria Gray

For thousands of years, the network of caravan route known as the Silk Road linked China in the East with the Mediterranean in the West. People, goods, ideas, music and dance traveled along the Silk Road, resulting in many cross-cultural connections. This workshop will explore some of the most characteristic dance elements from Turkic, Persian, and Indian cultures Participants will learn basic footwork, hand gestures, turns and shared movements common to several Silk Road dance styles.

Intersecting Dance: Afro-Caribbean Dance with Stefanie Belnavis

From the movements of nature and everyday life, the tribal people of Africa developed specific dances to summon the energy of the world around them into their bodies for connection and healing. In Jamaica specifically, a variety of Afro-Caribbean dance forms have evolved from Slavery. These include Kumina, Gerreh, Dinki Mini and Brukins. Throughout the workshop,we will reference the traditional vocabulary of the Brukins dance style. In addition, the combination of release technique, improvisation and the use of customary folksongs will aid this expressive art form by telling the story of life's happening.
Students/Patrons are asked to bring a wrap to this workshop.

Intersecting Dance: The Cipher with DCypher Dance with Natasha Hawkins

The cipher, or freestyle circle, is used in hip hop and breakdancing to exchange or "battle" using dance. Join members of JOMDC's Resident Hip Hop Company, DCypher Dance, to learn the fundamentals of freestyling, in a supportive environment.

Intersecting Dance: Turkish Romany Culture with Artemis

This workshop will begin with an overview of Romany (Gypsy) music, dance and culture worldwide and its significant contribution to the arts of the world. DVD footage and music samples will be shown and the workshop will include Turkish Romany (Gypsy) dance material. Dress for comfort and bring a scarf for your hips.

Intersecting Dance: Percussive Dance Across Cultures

How do the different percussive dance forms intersect? Where are they similar, and where do they depart? How did the forms come to be? Join JOMDC faculty, Heidi Schultz ,Shannon Dunne,and Estela Velez in this cultural journey of Flamenco, Rhythm Tap, and Old Irish Style (Sean Nos) in this exciting, interactive workshop.
Percussive Dance shoes such as tap, flamenco and/or hard soled shoes suggested. No sneakers.
