Studio to Stage:  Performance Dance Classes 
Summer Semester:  June 10 - August 31, 2008

Please note: Classes are subject to cancellation or change of time, teacher, or location based on management discretion.
                   Unless otherwise noted, students must be 18 years and above to participate in adult classes and workshops.
                   Adult enrollment and performance class start and end dates vary. Please check the schedule below.
                   Students must be 19 years and over to participate in adult performance classes.

Our performance classes are offered each semester in various dance disciplines as an opportunity for the adult student to experience the process and thrill of performing.  

These performance classes culminate in a showcase performance at The Jack Guidone Theater on August 16 & 17, 2008:

Dreamgirls Performance Class (Broadway Jazz)
with Amy Carson

Thursdays, 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. at JOMDC Bethesda
June 12 - August 14, 2008 (10 weeks)
Tuition:  $200 (10 weeks)
Level:  Beginning 2 and Above

The congo drums begin pulsating as the Apollo Theater announcer introduces the "delicious, the delectable, the defiant Dreamettes!" and "Move!" the opening number to "Dreamgirls" begins. You can be a part of this exciting and enegetic musical theater number by participating in this fast-paced; bootie-shaking; hip-thrusting performance workshop. Based in 1960s-style girl group dance moves, the class will emphasize body placement, specificity of movement, and how to sell a number. Make your showgirl dreams a reality and register for this supreme "Dreamgirls" workshop today!  All students are required to attend class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming according to teacher guidelines.  All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and the community on Saturday, August 16, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 17, at 7:00 p.m. at JOMDC's Jack Guidone Theater., tickets: $15.00 general admission, $12.00 students/seniors.

Hip Hop Performance Class 
with Joseph Nontanovan

Mondays, 9:00-10:30 p.m. at JOMDC Friendship Heights  
June 16 - August 11, 2008 (9 weeks)
Tuition:  $180 
Level:  Low Intermediate and above Hip Hop   Registration Closed

Deliver a performance like you've never before imagined!  Break the boundaries of your personal movement and develop stage character while grasping a diverse range of styles ranging from true school to progressive.  Motivated and conscientious dancers with a thorough understanding of groove and various Hip Hop "fundamentals" will be pushed to dig deeper and challenge the limitations of expression through this ever-evolving genre. Class attire: tank tops, shorts, spandex and jazz sneakers are highly discouraged and not appropriate for this class. All students are required to attend class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming according to teacher guidelines.  All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. Latin Hip Hop Performance Class
with Juli Calderon

Thursdays, 8:30-10:00 p.m. at JOMDC Friendship Heights

This class will challenge students to learn hip hop choreography that is fused with Latin dances, while also exploring African and modern dance styles. This class will also include the history and cultural significance of these dances.  All students are required to attend class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming according to teacher guidelines.  All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. Raqs Sharqi Performance Class 
with Yillah

Saturdays from 2:30-4:00 p.m. at JOMDC Bethesda
June 14 - August 16, 2008  (10 weeks)

Beginning 1 and above Belly Dance

In this performance class, students will learn a dance inspired by traditional raqs sharqi, steeped in the traditions of the Middle East . Raqs sharqi is considered one of the oldest dances in the world.  Translated from Arabic meaning “Oriental Dance”, raqs sharqi is traditionally a solo improvisational form. Students will learn a piece of choreography using the elements of improvisation and choreographic concepts commonly used in western dance. Along with the choreography, students will learn a dance that communicates emotion and meaning through rhythm and movement. All students are required to attend class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming according to teacher guidelines.  All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. Salsa Performance Class
with Natalia Schifini

Fridays from 8:30-9:30 p.m. at JOMDC Atlas
(No Class July 4) 
June 13 - August 15, 2008  (9 weeks)

Beginning 2 and above Salsa  
Registration Closed

This performance class will focus on partnership and solo work, emphasizing Salsa dance, and incorporating other Latin dance into the choreography. Although partnering work will be taught, no partner is necessary to register for the class. Learn a choreographed performance piece that will build performance quality into all your Latin dance moves. All students are required to attend class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming according to teacher guidelines.  All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and the community on Saturday, August 16, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 17, at 7:00 p.m. at JOMDC's Jack Guidone Theater., tickets: $15.00 general admission, $12.00 students/seniors.

Dance PLUS: Choreography and Composition Class 
with Vladimir Angelov

Dance PLUS Informal Showcase at our Jack Guidone Theater, Sunday, July 27 at 8 p.m. 
Tickets: $5.00 at the door

Dance PLUS is an intensive choreography workshop led by internationally renowned choreographer Vladimir Angelov. The workshop combines lectures, practical exercises, improvisational tasks, and compositional homework. The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with the basics of the choreographic process and for each participant to then create a piece of choreography (solo or group) which is presented before a live audience. All students are required to attend class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming according to teacher guidelines.  All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and the community on Sunday, July 27, at 8:00 p.m. at JOMDC's Jack Guidone Theater, tickets: $5.00 at the door only.
