Belly Dance
Belly
Dance Fusion is a blending or borrowing of stylistic
elements from other dance forms. The focus can be on either
the movement, the music or both. In
this performance class we will explore both aspects by
creating a dance to a 'fusion' piece of music. [Middle
Eastern core and instruments - but with other cultural
influences.] The movement will be based in raqs sharqi,
[belly dance] - but with additional movement from the
appropriate dance form of the music being performed.
Students may be asked for a small amount of their own input.
All students are required to attend
class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order
to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming
according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to
keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will
culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and
the community on Saturday, December 15, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday,
December 16, at 7:00 p.m. at JOMDC's Jack Guidone Theater.,

Belly Dance
Informal performance at JOMDC, Bethesda, Sunday, December 3,
2007
Belly
dance in
America
evolved its own unique style: a five or seven part solo
performed in restaurants and nightclubs. This
so-called "cabaret routine" features fast and slow
dance sections, various rhythms, veil work and a drum solo --
all improvised by the performer. This class will
spend two weeks exploring each portion of the 5-part
routine, helping students increase stage presence, develop
greater musicality, create dynamic interest, provide a
framework for improvisation and build stamina. Students will
also learn about the mythic and symbolic aspect of the
solo and how it can add new depth to their performance.
The
last sessions will allow students to present
elements of their own "cabaret routine" in
the classroom. All students are required to attend
class, be prompt and participate on a regular basis in order
to perform. Students must purchase their own costuming
according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to
keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will
culminate in an informal performance for friends, family and
the community on Sunday, December 9, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at JOMDC,
Bethesda. Admission is free.
